This Week's BLLA Commentary

Members-Only Clubs: Breaking the Nightlife Mold

We’re taught from a young age the basis for all economics is supply and demand. Offering too much of anything extinguishes the flaming need for that limited-edition bag, those impossible to get reservations or an invite to that exclusive party. It should come as no surprise then that members only establishments are poised to take over nightlife and the hospitality industries.

Nightclubs are notorious for their short life span. Their flash-in-the-pan business models call for overhauls and rebranding nearly every five years. As the novelty wains, so does attendance; sell the space, redecorate, repeat, repeat, repeat…. But what if the novelty never wore off? Members Only bars and clubs are here to disrupt the model.

Unlike the quintessential bar or nightclub whose focus is on volume and patron turnover, members only clubs create demand by closing their doors to the general public and offering a fresh, catered and most importantly exclusive experience.

By offering not only food and drink, but boutique lodging, spaces for business collaborations and so much more, members of associations like the Hospital Club gain access to resources typically not offered in a single establishment. The Hospital Club in London offers its patrons use of private television and music studios, art galleries, live entertainment and networking events, booking services for lodging, discounted room rates, and world class dining options. Gone are the days of compartmentalizing fun and productivity.

The possibility of being denied entry serves to drastically diminish the threat of disinterest, allowing the Hospital Club and its contemporaries to adopt a members-only business model. Their novelty is revived with every new member approval. If what we’ve been taught proves true, demand for members-only clubs is about to skyrocket.

Come join us in Los Angeles Oct. 3-5 and hear from Sue Walter, the CEO of London's Hospital Club
